Why and when was the company started?
The company was formed in 2003.
Ellie Beedham, the company's Executive Director, brought Robert Tannion and Liam Steel together with the idea that they should collaborate on a project.
Rob and Liam had worked together in DV8 Physical Theatre for 6 years (Rob 6 years and Liam 8 years) and had met Ellie when she was DV8's Administrator on The Cost of Living — a large-scale project commissioned from DV8 for the cultural festival of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
After leaving DV8, they all went on to work freelance in theatre and dance. The meeting Ellie set up for the three of them happened to coincide with an approach to Liam made by writer Ben Payne to collaborate on a project. Ben and Liam had discussed initial ideas for a piece about the Soho bombing of the Admiral Duncan pub. It was to be piece for two men, and very quickly it was clear that this would be the perfect project on which they could all collaborate.
The first seeds of SINNER were thus planted and
Stan Won't Dance was born.
